Chapter 19
Puppet
We made it through another night. Z2 had reached Father, and he promised to send us aid. The walls of the city had stayed clear for another night, but the undead had gotten closer by the hour. If the sun hadnât risen, I honestly feared the worst. Not that we would have stayed to fight a losing battle. I knew our party could easily make it to safety, using several different paths.
The priests and priestesses rushed to heal the worst wounds. There was only so much mana to go around, and people were dying left and right. It was sad to see a soldier survive the battle just to die from his wounds afterward, but such was the fate of many here. I thanked the guard captain, then made my way back to the house.
The mood of the city was even worse than the actual damage it suffered. People were lying on the sides of streets with dead-looking eyes. The fight was slowly leaving the inhabitants of this âtrappedâ city. Food was running low, as were many other greatly needed items.
I reached the house shortly, wanting to get off the streets before I did something stupid. The last thing I needed was the people of the city flocking to me after I created a few bowls of food out of pity. I found the others already back and performing maintenance on their gear. Maybe I was spending too much time with the mortals.
âPuppet! Finally. Weâve been waiting for you,â Z2 said, getting up from her seat.
âSorry, Z2. There were a lot of things to take care even after the battle was over. Any more news from Father?â
âHe said heâs sending reinforcements tonight.â
âHow does he plan to get them here? Even with teleportation, he needs a marker. I canât get him one from here,â I said, taking a seat at the table.
âI donât know. But hey! Itâs Father weâre talking about. Iâm sure it will be out of this world,â Z2 said with a grin.
âFair point. Alright. Letâs all rest and recover our mana for the coming night. Even with Fatherâs reinforcements, I donât want to take any chances.â She had a point. It was Father we were talking about. I couldnât even picture how he might get his forces here.
The rest of the day passed quickly. With the continuous battles, Iâd risen to just under tier three. I was nearing the bottleneck, and I knew mine was going to be different from a normal mortal bottleneck. I wasnât sure how yet, since I hadnât reached it. It was something I was dreading the closer I got to it.
Later that evening, we met up in the dining room to discuss the nightâs plan. Everyone appeared ready for the fighting to start, which I took as a good sign. Father put me in charge of the party, but I never really knew if I was a good choice. I felt that as long as I kept them all alive, then Iâd have succeeded.
